Doomsday Seed Vault Stores 500,000 Crops

The purpose of the Doomsday vault in Norway is to preserve a wide variety of plant seeds from locations worldwide in an underground cavern, you know, so we can have a chance of surviving underground on on the moon after we ruin the surface of the earth...

Well, that's not the official reason but it is the widely held belief among paranoid theroists (of which I skirt the edge). 

Here's the official reason--according to Wikipedia:

"The seed vault will provide insurance against the loss of seeds in genebanks, as well as a refuge for seeds in the case of large scale regional or global crises."

Henrietta's "Immortal" Cells: She died in 1951, but her body lives forever.

Henrietta’s cells were the first immortal human cells ever grown in culture.

She was a tobacco farmer from southern Virginia who got cervical cancer when she was 30. A doctor at Johns Hopkins took a piece of her tumor without telling her and sent it down the hall to scientists there who had been trying to grow tissues in culture for decades without success. No one knows why, but her cells never died and now "He La" cells are used all over the world.

Henrietta's cells were used to help develop the first polio vaccine, they took a trip into space, & have been used many times since then. 

Henrietta died without ever knowing what a huge impact her living cells would make on the world.
